词汇 | knocker up |
词源 | knocker up. In the early 1800s people without servants had little more than a rooster or birdsong to wake them for work in the morning. This created a need for upknocking, a new (now obsolete) job category featuring the knocker-up, a man who went from house to house awakening all those who had paid him to do so. There may be some connection here with the British knock up (qv). |
