yakka. Only a handful of Australian Aboriginal words have come into the English language. One such word is yakka, meaning “work,” a term frequently used in Australia. Hard yak- ka means hard manual labor. Other Aboriginal words heard in the Land Down Under include: yabber, “to talk”; cooee, “within calling distance in the bush”; woomera, “a wooden stick or club”; dingo, “a wild dog domesticated by the Aborigines”; and many place names, including Canberra, the capital’s name, which is said to mean “Women’s Breasts,” after two local hills. |
