词汇 wireless
词源
wireless. This is an old British name for the radio that never really caught on in the U.S., although it has had limited use here. The word derives directly from the name of the Marconi Wire- less Telegraph Company. Guglielmo Marconi (1874–1937) was an Italian inventor in the field of wireless telegraphy and his company tried to establish a monopoly in the North Atlantic. Eventually the British applied the name for his wireless telegraph to the wireless radio, though now they too generally say radio. Marconi is remembered more directly for the marconigram, a radiogram, and the Marconi mast, once used for the mast for a radio antenna and now any elaborately rigged mast on a ship. See also radio; telegraph; telephone; television.
