词源 | quick mettle. High-spirited. Heard no more except on the stage, but used by Shakespeare in The Tragedy of Julius Caesar (1599). Brutus says it of the conspirator Casca: “He was quick mettle when he went to school.” Mettle is used today in the phrase on one’s mettle (accept any challenge and do one’s best). |
