词汇 ghost word
词源
ghost word. Ghost words are words that never existed until someone mistook an error for a word or invented a word for a special occasion. An example of the latter, also called a nonce word, is Lewis Carroll’s jabberwocky, invented for the nonce (for a single use in his book Through the Looking Glass). Many nonce words have become full members of the language. Ghost words—the term was invented by etymologist Walter William Skeat—are usually spurious terms, the result of errors made by authors, typists, editors, and printers, and they hardly ever be- come part of the language. An example of a lasting ghost word is dord (meaning density) which can be found in the 1934 Mer- riam-Webster Dictionary, second edition. Dord began life as an error made in transcribing a card that read: “D or d, meaning a capital D or small d—for ‘density.’ ” Eliminated from future Merriam-Webster dictionaries, this ghost word lives on in the 1934 edition.
