getty. Pronounced JET-ee. An old term for a streetcorner or- gan grinder, usually one with a monkey trained to collect coins thrown by the audience. Sometimes the getty’s monkey would climb up the apartment windows to get the coins. Today the term is mainly remembered in an old song “The Sidewalks of New York”: “And the getty plays the organ on the sidewalks of New York.” |
