John Bull. Dr. John Arbuthnot (1667–1735), Queen Anne’s physician, wrote a collection of pamphlets anonymously pub- lished in 1712 and entitled The History of John Bull. Though he did not invent the term John Bull, he made it famous as a per- sonification of England, its plump red-faced English farmers dressed in a top hat and high boots. Dr. Arbuthnot described his character as “an honest plain-dealing fellow . . . very apt to quarrel with his best friends . . . if they pretend to govern him . . . a boon companion with his bottle. . . .” Among the oth- er characters in the work is Lewis Baboon, the French king Louis XIV, a strange choice of names for a work meant to champion the end of war with France. Philip of Spain fared no better, dubbed Lord Strutt.
