To his em- barrassment, Dr. Johnson in his great dictionary defined cur- mudgeon as “a vicious manner of pronouncing coeur mechant,” these last words being French for “heart” and “evil.” The truth is that no one knows the origin of curmudgeon, just that the word is first recorded in 1577.
