词汇 | mccarthyism |
词源 | McCarthyism. McCarthyism was coined by author Max Lerner and introduced for the first time in his newspaper col- umn on April 5, 1950. The word notes the witch-hunting prac- tices and disregard of civil liberties that his critics accused Senator Joseph McCarthy (1905–57) of using and inspiring during the “Red” scare in the early 1950s. The Wisconsin sena- tor, a great patriot to his supporters, first charged the Demo- cratic administration with allowing communist infiltration of the State Department. After taking on other government de- partments, he finally met his match when he attacked the army for alleged security lapses. The army, in turn, accused him of seeking special privileges, and while McCarthy was acquitted by the Senate of this charge, he was censured by a vote of 67–22 for his insolent behavior toward Senate committees. Earlier, the McCarthy hearings were televised and his countenance and re- peated “Point of order, Mr. Chairman, point of order” became familiar throughout America. His low tactics ruined the lives of many innocent people. |
