词源 | Cullinan diamond. Most famous of the precious stones bearing someone’s name is the 3,106 metric carat (over 11⁄4 lbs.) diamond found in South Africa’s Premier Mine in 1905. The stone, the largest diamond ever unearthed, was named af- ter the mine’s discoverer-director, Sir Thomas Major Cullinan. Presented to England’s King Edward VII in 1907, it was cut into a number of specimens worth collectively over a million pounds. The Star of Africa made from it is, at 530.2 metric car- ats, the largest cut diamond in the world. |
