词汇 cry over spilt milk
词源
cry over spilt milk. Canadian humorist Thomas C. Halibur- ton, whose Down East humor strongly influenced American literature, had a friend say this to his famous character Sam Slick, a shrewd Yankee peddler, in The Clockmaker; or the Say- ings and Doings of Samuel Slick of Slickville (1836). “What’s done, Sam, can’t be helped, there is no use cryin’ over spilt milk” were the exact words. This is the first use of the expres- sion in print, though to cry over spilt milk seems homely enough to be of much older origin. It expresses, of course, the folly of vain regret, meaning “to grieve over something beyond saving,” something you can’t do anything about. Haliburton, a Canadian jurist, later returned to England and became a member of Parliament.
