shoemaker (n.)

14世纪晚期（13世纪晚期在姓氏和地名中出现）， cobelere “修补鞋子的人”，起源不明。它和 cobble（v.）“在词源上显然是一起的”[OED]，但历史记录存在一些困难。 “鞋匠应该专注于他的本行”（ne sutor ultra crepidam）来自希腊画家阿佩莱斯的轶事。

On one occasion a cobbler noticed a fault in the painting of a shoe, and remarking upon it to a person standing by, passed on. As soon as the man was out of sight Apelles came from his hiding-place, examined the painting, found that the cobbler's criticism was just, and at once corrected the error. ... The cobbler came by again and soon discovered that the fault he had pointed out had been remedied; and, emboldened by the success of his criticism, began to express his opinion pretty freely about the painting of the leg! 公元1300年左右，"一个创造、塑造、形成或铸造的人"，也指"上帝作为创造者"，是动词 make 的名词化形式。具体来说，"制造商"在14世纪末开始使用。到1814年，"meet (one's) maker"的意思是"死亡"。

中古英语 sho，指“人类脚的低帮鞋”，源自古英语 scoh，源自原始日耳曼语 *skokhaz（也是古诺尔斯语 skor，丹麦语和瑞典语 sko，古弗里斯兰语 skoch，古萨克森语 skoh，中古荷兰语 scoe，荷兰语 schoen，古高地德语 scuoh，德语 Schuh，哥特语 skoh 的来源）。除了与印欧语根 *skeu- “覆盖”（拉丁语 ob-scurus 中的第二个元素的来源）有关之外，没有已知的同源词。

旧复数形式 shoon 一直持续到16世纪。“金属板或边缘钉在马或牲畜的蹄上，以保护它免受伤害”的含义可追溯至公元1300年。shoe 和 boot（名词）之间的区别可追溯至公元1400年。

从1767年开始， stand in someone's shoes 的意思是“从他或她的角度看问题”。Old shoe 作为某种毫无价值的东西的类型可追溯至14世纪末。

新婚夫妇的汽车挂着鞋子，保留了古老的习俗（自1540年代起提到），即向某人扔一只旧鞋以祝他们好运。也许这种联系与肮脏有关，基于“泥泞就是好运”的原则。
