red herring (n.)

"熏鲱鱼"早在15世纪就出现了（在腌制时会变成红色），与 white herring "新鲱鱼"相对。据说是逃亡者用来蒙混血猎犬的（1680年代），因此在1864年引申为“用来转移注意力的东西”的比喻意义； 早期它只是指“一个错误的线索”：
