14世纪末，“敏捷的，迅速的，有活力的”（14世纪初作为姓氏），是苏格兰和北方的一个词，可能来自于古英语 -ræsc 的残存（如 ligræsc “闪电”）或其日耳曼语同源词之一，源自原始日耳曼语 *raskuz（也是中低地德语 rasch, 、中古荷兰语 rasc “迅速的，敏捷的”，德语 rasch “迅速的，快速的”，丹麦语 rask “敏捷的，迅速的”）。与古英语 horsc “机智的”相关。

现在英语中的原始意义已经过时。1500年左右开始出现“鲁莽的，冲动的，不顾后果的，行动或决策草率的”之意。相关词： Rashly； rashness。
