occidental (adj.)

约在1400年，指天空或地球的“在西方的、属于西方的或在西方”，来源于14世纪的古法语“occidental”，直接源自拉丁语“occidentalis”，意为“西方的”，源自“occidentem”（见“occident”）。1550年代，“西方的地区（尤指西欧和其衍生的西半球文明）的、关于西方的或具有西方特色的”（相对于 oriental）。作为大写名词，“西方人”（相对于 Oriental），最早可追溯至1823年。相关词语： Occidentalism; occidentalist。
