normalcy (n.)

1857年，“直角的数学条件，几何学中的正常状态或事实”，源自 normal + -cy。自1920年以来，这个词与美国总统沃伦·G·哈定（他在那一年的竞选口号是“回归正常”，意思是第一次世界大战前的情况）有关。以前 normalcy 主要用于数学意义上，而“正常情况”的纯粹主义者更喜欢用 normality 这个词。哈定在任期内使用这个词被嘲笑为他那些被人轻视的语言无能的例子（民主党政治家威廉·G·麦克阿杜·朱尼尔称哈定的演讲为“一个自大的短语军队在寻找一个想法的景象”）。
