spittle (n.)
"唾液，口水，由唾腺分泌的黏液质物质”，15世纪晚期， 可能是中古英语 spetel， spotel 的改变（受 spit (n.1)影响），源于古英语 spætl， spatl，源于原始日耳曼语 *spait-（也是古英语 spætan “吐口水”的来源），源自 PIE 词根 *sp(y)eu- “呕吐，吐口水”（参见 spew (v.)）。中古英语还有一个动词 spitelen “吐出某物，痰液排出”。
