hinterland (n.)

1890年，最初用于地理学，指“紧密与港口城市经济联系的位于其后方和内陆的地区”，源自德语 Hinterland，由 hinter “后方”（见 hinder（adj.））和 Land “国家”（见 land（n.））组成。在英语中，这被称为 back-country。乔治·G·奇索姆（George G. Chisholm）在《商业地理手册》中将德语单词翻译为 hinderland，据说是在他1888年的版本中首次出现，而 Hinder-land 也在1881年由理查德·伯顿（Richard Burton）等人用来翻译一个古埃及象形文字，表示“叙利亚”。在欧洲殖民主义的语言中，Hinterland 因指涉一个沿海地区后方的内陆地区而备受瞩目，该地区被一个国家宣称。
