13世纪末，“开始，进入存在的行为或事实”，来自古法语 comencement “开始，起点”（现代法语 commencement），源自 comencier “开始，启动”（见 commence）。
1850年，美国英语中出现了“学校毕业典礼”的意思，最初指的是大学的典礼，指毕业班成员成为学士、硕士等（commencement 在“进入大学硕士或博士特权”的意义上是来自14世纪末的）； 然后扩展到学院和低年级学校的毕业典礼。
