Angel of the Mountains; Eagle of Toledo. Nicknames of the two greatest climbers in cycling history. The Angel of the Moun- tains was Charly Gaul, a “king of the mountain” twice in the Giro d’Italia. The Eagle of Toledo was Federico Bahamontes, a six-time “king of the mountains.” Both also shared the same panache. Once Bahamontes so outdistanced the pack during a stage of the Tour de France that he stopped at the top of a mountain and enjoyed an ice cream while waiting for the oth- ers to catch up (though this may be a PR story). Gaul became a recluse after he retired from racing in 1962, living for more than 30 years in a Luxembourg cabin decorated with Christian symbols. He died in 2005, age 72. |
