Jayhawker State. A nickname for Kansas (see jay hawk). Kansas has also been called the Battleground of Freedom (in Civil War times), the Garden State (a title it shares with New Jersey), the Garden of the West (Illinois also claims this one), the Grasshopper State (after grasshopper invasions there), the Cyclone State, the Sunflower State (after the state flower), the Squatter State, the Central State, the Dust Bowl State (see dust bowl) and, best of all, the Navel of the Nation. |
