词汇 | proselytize |
词源 | proselytize. Proselytize means to convert someone to a reli- gion or point of view. The word derives from the Greek proselu- tos, “one who has come to a place, or a convert.” The first prose- lytes were apparently Greek converts to Judaism, some of whom accepted the religion wholly and some of whom only agreed to refrain from working on the Sabbath and making sacrifices to heathen gods. Proselyte is first recorded by John Wycliffe in 1382. |
