precocious. Trees and fruits that flowered or ripened early were called precocious by the English in the early 17th century, the word deriving from the Latin prae, “before,” and coquere, “to cook,” which formed praecoquere, “to cook beforehand.” By the end of the century writers were applying this botanical word to people, especially children who are especially mature or learned for their ages, who are “cooked before their time.” |
