Praise the Lord and pass the ammunition! These words, later made into a popular song by Frank Loesser, may have been spoken by Navy chaplain Lt. Commander Howell Mau- rice Forgy (1908–83) aboard the cruiser New Orleans during the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941. Some authorities claim they were spoken by Captain William Maguire of the New Orleans. Still others say the words were first used in the Civil War. Whoever said them spoke to a chain of men passing ammunition to a ship’s guns. |
