potbelly. Men, and rarely women, have been afflicted with potbellies since time immemorial, but the protruding stomachs have been so named only since about 1657, when the term was first recorded, in the form of pot-bellied. Later, in 1714, Alexan- der Pope was the first to use potbelly, writing of “an Animal” with “bandy legs” . . . “a short neck and a pot belly.” Potbelly may refer to the shape of the protruding belly of a pot, or a love of food from the cooking pot, or both—no one knows for sure.
