mammoth. Mammoth means something of great or enor- mous size, but the word was first applied to a large hairy ele- phant of the genus Mammuthus, sometimes called the woolly mammoth, when skeletons of Mammuthus primigenius were found in Siberia in 1706. The creature’s name in Russian was mamant, which became the English mammoth and was eventu- ally applied to anything of huge size. |
