punk. Punk was originally 16th-century slang for a prosti- tute or harlot, the word of unknown origin. It has since come to mean a number of things, depending on the context it is used in, and usually refers to a male. These meanings include: a male, usually young, who has been or is said to have been sodomized; a young inexperienced boy; a petty criminal; and any insignificant person. Punk style of dress seems to come ul- timately from the dress of young hoodlums in the 1950s, while punk in the sense of inferior or bad is said to be of 18th- century British origin, deriving from “rotting wood” called punk. |
