shittimwood. The bark of this American tree is a powerful cathartic; hence its name, first recorded in 1884. Rhamnus pur- shiana is also called “bearberry” and “bear-wood.” Other trees called “shittimwood” were so named because their wood was worthless for lumber. Finally, there is the shittimwood (proba- bly an acacia) that is said to have been used to make the ark of the covenant (Ex. 25–26), its name deriving from Hebrew shit- tim, “wood.” |
