词汇 | shitepoke |
词源 | shitepoke; crazy as a shitepoke. When flushed out by hunt- ers, the small green heron (Ardea virescens) discharges its bow- els and runs crazily to and fro. This led to American pioneers calling it the “shitepoke” (shite “excrement,” plus poke, “bag”), which also became a name for any vile person. Crazy as a shite- poke, “very crazy,” was first recorded in 1943 but must be much older. Wrote Laura Wood in Walter Reed (1943): “He’d be all right with a little rest, but sometimes, after a more severe ordeal by snow and silence, a man would come out crazy as—they had a word for it here—as a shitepoke, the awkward heron that seems to have no sense at all.” |
