词源 | come out of the closet. To acknowledge that one is a homo- sexual. Though the expression is first recorded in this sense in 1971, it is much older in other meanings. For instance, the great scholar and writer Joseph Addison (1672–1719) wrote: “I shall be ambitious to have it said of me, that I have brought phi- losophy out of closets, schools and libraries, to dwell in clubs and assemblies, at tea-tables and coffee-houses.” See cato conspiracy; catiline. |
