词源 | code pricing. Still practiced on occasion, but rarely used any- more, code pricing was common in early American country stores. It gave a storekeeper an added advantage when bar- gaining with a customer because he could tell what every piece of merchandise cost without the customer’s knowing. A mer- chant, for instance, might make the letters in NOW BE SHARP represent 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10 (an N would equal the numeral 1, an O the numeral 2, a W the numeral 3, and so on). Every trusted clerk would be given this equation, and if a piece of merchandise was marked, say, NWW on the back, anyone with the formula would know its cost was $1.33. |
