| 词源 | owl; drunk as an owl. The owl takes its name from the imita- tion of its cry. In Anglo-Saxon its name was ule, while in Latin it was ulula. The saying drunk as an owl, Weekley maintains, refers to the “blinking solemnity” of the bird. The owl symbolizes wis- dom. So soft and fluffy is its plumage that its flight is almost soundless, although species like the screech owl have a piercing, wailing cry. |
