Feydeauesque. French playwright Georges Feydeau (1862– 1921) was so noted for his bedroom farces that his name, in the form of Feydeauesque, has become a synonym for them. It is said that one of Feydeau’s early farces was almost booed off the stage on opening night, and a friend spotted the playwright himself standing in the aisle, joining in the hissing and catcalls. “Have you gone crazy?” his friend asked him. “No, this way I can’t hear them,” Feydeau replied, “and it doesn’t hurt so much.” |
