| 词源 | milliner. One of the great fashion centers of the world in the early 16th century, Milan, Italy set styles for all Europe. Milan gloves, Milan hats, Milan point lace, Milan ribbons, Milan nee- dles, and even Milan jewelry were among the many items ex- ported to England from the Paris of its day. Shopkeepers who sold these imported articles, only some of them merchants from Milan, were naturally named Milaners, but the English pronounced and spelled the word Milliners, which eventually lost its capital. The small shops, run primarily by men at first, did often specialize in making and selling ladies’ hats, but the use of milliner exclusively for a designer or a seller of women’s headgear is fairly recent. |
