The word merry-go-round, first recorded in 1729, may have been suggested by the British dialect term merry-go-down for strong ale (1500), according to Weekley: As the merry-go-down goes down, goes down, the whole world spins like a merry-go-round. Another old use of merry is in the obsolete merry-go-sorry, laughter and crying mixed close together. |
