ain’t hay. Hay has meant a small amount of money in Ameri- can slang since at least the late 1930s, which is about the same time that this expression is first recorded. Little more is known about the very common and that ain’t hay for “a lot of money,” a saying that I would suspect is older than currently supposed. |
