Soho. London’s noted Soho area probably takes its name from the old hunting cry Soho, used centuries ago when there were hunting fields in the vicinity. This cosmopolitan area, however, noted for its nightclubs, striptease clubs, and restau- rants, did not give its name to New York City’s SoHo district in Manhattan, which is a shortening of South of Houston (Street) by which it is bordered on the north. The area, revitalized in the 1970s and 1980s, is a fashionable neighborhood, among the most vibrant in the city. In the early 19th century it was known as Hell’s Hundred Acres. See tallyho. |
