backgammon. Backgammon takes its name from the early English gamen, “game,” the back in the word reflecting the strategy in the game of “sending back” pieces to the board. The game, closely related to checkers, is far older than its English name. “Back game,” or backgammon, dates back thousands of years; in fact, a handsomely crafted backgammon board was found in the 5,000-year-old tomb of Babylonian queen Shub-ad. |
