galenical. A medicinal preparation composed mainly of herbal or vegetable matter is called a galenical. Opium, for ex- ample, would be among such drugs. The term honors Claudius Galen (ca. a.d. 129–99), who is known in history as the “prince of physicians.” This Greek doctor and philosopher served as personal physician to Roman emperor Marcus Aurelius, and his writings were the most influential in medicine for a thou- sand years. |
