词汇 | galilean telescope |
词源 | Galilean telescope; Galilean mechanics. Among his many scientific contributions, the great Italian scientist Galileo Gali- lei (1564–1642) founded experimental physics and astronomy and invented or improved a telescope that enabled him to scan the heavens. Galileo was also a man of great courage. When tried by the Inquistion and told to recant his belief that the Earth moves around the Sun, he complied, but rose from his knees and exclaimed sotto voce, “e pur si muove” (nevertheless it does move). Blind in his last days, he still searched for the truth of all things. Another of his famous pronouncements was “The book of nature is a book written by the hand of God in the language of mathematics.” |
