Some will remember this catchphrase as the cry of American song and dance man Ted Lewis working the audience, meaning “Is everybody satisfied with the show?” The words certainly go back long before 1905, when the Ameri- can song “Is Everybody Happy?” appeared. According to Par- tridge, “it has been the traditional cry of the red-nosed comedi- an [bidding for] the raucous chorus [of affirmation] guaranteed to come rolling back at him from the stalls . . .” |
