field corn. Corn that is raised as feed for livestock is called field corn, even though all corn is, of course, grown in fields. Before the 19th century, when sweet corn was developed, what is now called field corn served as both fodder for animals and human consumption (when the ears were picked young and tender). As the late John Ciardi pointed out, “fodder corn” would be a less absurd name for field corn, but language is not always a matter of logic. |
