词汇 | a bridge too far |
词源 | a bridge too far. Any foolish ill-advised strategy. The phrase was popularized by Cornelius Ryan’s A Bridge Too Far (1974), a history of the World War II (September 10, 1944) airborne drop on Holland. It is said that one of Field Marshal Montgom- ery’s staff told him, “I think we might be going a bridge too far,” on hearing Monty’s plan to capture 11 enemy bridges in the op- eration. No one listened and the Allies suffered terrible casual- ties. There is controversy about whether or not the conversation in Ryan’s book really took place, but, in any case, the expression a bridge too far was kept alive by the book and the movie made from it. |
