fedora. This common man’s felt hat was named for a Russian princess. Fedora Romanoff was the leading character in Victorien Sardou’s 1882 play Fedora, the part written for Sarah Bernhardt, the greatest actress of her day. In its American production, how- ever, Fanny Davenport played the lead role and had a great suc- cess. The name of the character she played became known throughout the country and a hat manufacturer cashed in on its popularity by naming one of the soft felt hats he made after it. See also trilby hat. |
