Marco Milione. As everyone knows who has seen or read Eugene O’Neill’s play Marco Millions (1928), this is the name Italians gave to Marco Polo (ca. 1254–ca. 1324) and his many wonderful travel tales of China and the court of Kublai Khan, among other colorful places. His fellow Venetians also called him Il Milione, “the million.” The name recalls the millions of wonders and riches he discovered. |
