in at the kill. If you consider fox hunting a sport—Oscar Wilde said a fox hunt consisted of “the unspeakable in full pur- suit of the inedible”—this expression can be considered a sporting phrase. In at the kill means “participating in the finish of something, especially something satisfying and vindictive,” and originated in the upper-crust British world of the hunt sometime during the 1800s.
