Machu Picchu. The name of an ancient Inca fortress city in the Andes never found by the Spanish invaders of Peru. This “Lost City,” the ruins of which weren’t discovered until 1911, once held architectural wonders, including a palace and a tem- ple. Perched high on a steep ridge, it dramatically overlooks the Urubamba River 2,000 feet below and looks up at the Andean peak that gave it its name. |
