词源 | Anglo-Saxon. Also called Old English, Anglo-Saxon is the En- glish language from the mid-fifth to the 12th century. In her li- bretto for Deems Taylor’s opera The King’s Henchman (1927), which is set in the palace of King Edgar in 10th-century En- gland, American poet Edna St. Vincent Millay tried to use no word that came into English after the Norman Conquest (1066). Her “Anglo-Saxon” libretto began “Wild as the white waves / Rushing and roaring . . .” See burn candle at both ends. |
