Annuit Coeptis. The mottoes on the reverse side of the Great Seal of the U.S. are Annuit Coeptis (“He [God] has favored our undertakings”) and Novus Ordo Seclorum (“a new order of the ages”). These were condensed by William Barton, designer of the Great Seal, from a line in Virgil’s Eclogues (line 5). |
