词汇 texas mouse
词源
Texas mouse. A euphemism for a rat, or rather a failed eu- phemism. Back in February 1983, American Airlines captain Karl Burrell reported a big rat foraging aboard his plane in the first-class cabin as he prepared for takeoff to New York from Dallas. “The stewardesses prevailed on the captain to turn the plane around, and we sat on the ground for 45 minutes,” said an eyewitness. “Finally, Captain Burrell polled all the first- class passengers and they decided we should go on with the rat. It was at least six inches long. We heard the captain say to the control tower, ‘Let them take care of the problem in New York.’ ” The airline’s public relations director euphemistically called the rodent a “Texas mouse,” but a local exterminator said, “Smells like a rat to me—we don’t get six-inch mice even in Texas.” The rat was killed once the plane landed at La Guardia.
